Culinary Institute of America (CIA) as a Leader of Culinary Arts

Author: Chris Robinson & Marina Kaleb

While free online courses are great and all, they often look past the more specialized, professional aspects of the subject.

For those in the culinary arts, it may be interesting to dabble in a new cuisine. Perhaps even learn a couple of new techniques. Read on to learn all about the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Prochef below!

CIA: From Noble Beginnings To Prestigious Future

The Culinary Institute of America began in 1946, as the New Haven Restaurant Institute, opened its doors. Being the first of its kind in the States, the school was opened to train WW2 veterans in the culinary field, to aid their transition to civilian life.

While the school’s initial purpose was military rehabilitation, founders Frances Roth and Katharine Angell had a bigger vision. They wanted to create a centre for culinary knowledge in the USA. In the following years from its inception, the CIA was overwhelmed by applications; both from veterans and citizens wanting to gain a prestigious culinary arts education. To cope with the increased numbers of students, the institute relocated and expanded its campuses. The idea was to ensure all students had a dedicated place of learning. By the end of the 1970s, the institute was known as the leader of culinary education in the USA. Life Magazine even described the CIA as “The Harvard of Haute Cuisine” in 1978.

From the 1980s and onwards, the CIA would continue to expand its curriculum and premises; multiple students opened restaurants for undergrads to practice their skills. The coming decades marked the school’s first West Coast expansion into California, the organization's festivals and nutrition initiatives.

Fast forward to today, the CIA is considered the prime authority for culinary arts education in the USA. As one of the most prestigious schools in the world, the CIA alumni have opened some of the most luxurious restaurants.

CIA: Prochef

But how do you get into the CIA?

The CIA has created a unique Prochef program. It is a series of extensive online courses that train aspiring chefs from the comfort of their own homes! Prospective students simply need to apply and will be guided to a course of their skill level.

What makes this course different from a number of the other free or cheaper courses available online today?

The celebrity alumni, combined with the CIA's history and reputation means that any certification from the institute is extremely highly regarded in the culinary sector. On the other hand, Hospitality Academy’s courses allow you to study and work at some of the most luxurious restaurants simultaneously! If you wish, you could even work at a Michelin star restaurant of CIA alumni!

Aside from the prestige, the main aspect of the course is the hands-on, customized experience that students receive. From the very beginning, students of the CIA Prochef program are paired with a qualified adviser/instructor. They guide them through the course material based on the students’ experience and previous education. However, at Hospitality Academy, the idea is to learn through experience at some of the most luxurious restaurants from the best chefs in the world!

Upon completion, students will have expertise in a plethora of new culinary arts techniques from both institutions. Additionally, they will gain an insight into how successful chefs perfect their craft and the philosophy of perfect cuisine.
